Nutricost Magnesium+ Extra-Strength is a high-potency magnesium formula supplied in a 240-capsule bottle. At the labeled serving size, the bottle provides 120 servings. Magnesium is an essential mineral required for hundreds of enzyme reactions and contributes to normal neuromuscular signaling, ATP-dependent energy metabolism, electrolyte balance, protein synthesis and maintenance of normal bone physiology. The nutritional comparison between magnesium products should be based on the amount of elemental magnesium on the Supplement Facts panel, not on the gross weight of the magnesium compounds themselves. This formula combines an inorganic form, magnesium oxide, with magnesium glycinate. Oxide contains a high proportion of elemental magnesium by weight, while glycinate associates magnesium with the amino acid glycine; the two forms have different solubility and gastrointestinal characteristics. The extra-strength designation refers to the 420 mg elemental-magnesium serving, which is double the 210 mg serving used in Nutricost's regular-strength version. Because this is a concentrated magnesium supplement, total intake from food, multivitamins and other mineral products should be considered together. Supplemental magnesium can produce loose stools, abdominal discomfort or other gastrointestinal effects in some users, especially as the dose increases. Magnesium can also reduce absorption of certain medicines when taken at the same time, and people with impaired kidney function require particular caution because renal excretion is central to magnesium balance. The formulation, elemental dose, serving size and individual tolerance are more useful decision points than broad claims about sleep, stress or muscle performance, and the product should not be presented as a treatment or cure for disease.
